THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL (WAEC): A PARTNER IN THE MAINTENANCE OF EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS IN ITS MEMBER COUNTRIES
Assessment is a critical component of the teaching and learning process. It is a deliberate course of action that measures learning outcomes after teaching has taken place. A good assessment should be sustainable and promote or motivate holistic and constructive development of the student either formally or informally. WAEC, as an assessment body, scrutinizes its activities and procedures periodically to ensure quality control and maintenance of standards in the examinations it conducts. The truth is that the relevance and necessity of assessment today will not diminish in generations to come. The world has become a fast-changing society where the future promises an explosion of inventions and discoveries, which assessment bodies could take advantage of. Assessment bodies like WAEC, therefore, cannot afford to be left behind. This paper takes a look at some key procedures that WAEC utilizes, some challenges it encounters in ensuring that standards are maintained in the development and administration of tests in its member countries with particular reference to Ghana and makes some suggestions for ,progress.
