A Look at Indigenizing Assessment

&#160,This paper follows the evolution of the Diversity Assessment Rubric at the University of Hawai&#8216,i at Hilo.By describing the difficult process of negotiating competing perspectives&#8212,one promoting universal&#160,multiculturalism, the other maintaining native cultural sovereignty, the authors highlight the challenges&#160,facing educators in not only teaching &#8220,diversity&#8221, but also assessing faculty and student success learning&#160,and teaching of this concept in an environment that has an indigenous past and vibrant present along with&#160,a history of multi-ethnic settlement.The authors contend that bridging the two requires integration of&#160,both into an &#8220,assessment&#8221, tool that serves more as a facilitator of complex interaction as opposed to&#160,simply generating data for accountability.&#160,
