Face validity is defined as whether, on the face of it, a test measures what it purports to measure. Measurement experts agree that this is not sufficient evidence to support the interpretation and use of test scores. However, their approach obscures the potential usefulness of studying stakeholders’ perceptions about a test. These perceptions can influence various aspects of the test design, interpretations and use. Moreover, negative perceptions might undermine the implementation of a test for the its intended purposes and, consequently, threaten its validity. In this talk Tzur Karelitz presentsseveral ways that stakeholders’ perceptions can be used to improve the work of test developers and validators.
