Open Book Exam will increase focus on understanding of concepts

The All Indian Council for Technical Eduation (AICTE) gave a nod to open book examination for engineering, wherein students will be allowed to refer to textbooks and lecture notes in the examination hall. Open book exams are already a part of some educational institutions informally. AICTE’s approval will help more institutes to adopt it formally. It will make the foundation of our education system stronger as students will be focusing more on understanding concepts rather than cramming it. Conceptual understanding will lead to better implementation of ideas which will result in innovation. However, as the understanding of a concept depends upon some fundamental information in the mind, the fear with open book exams is that students will do away with memorising even the basic information.
