In his presentation, Paul explains the two major threats to validity—construct underrepresentation and construct-irrelevant variance—in terms that your grandmother could understand. He introduces a metaphor, the signal processing metaphor, which helps us to understand how educational assessments are supposed to work; and, more importantly, how they can go wrong. This provides a “big picture” perspective on threats to validity (which he’ll illustrate with some big picture.
